What’s New in Therapy?
One of these technologies is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP). This is a super exciting emerging therapy that targets the autonomic nervous system through music. Studies are showing listening to music manipulated to certain frequencies can help people suffering with anxiety, PTSD, sound sensitivities, autism etc. to connect to their rest and digest system.
In other words it can help people feel safe. Awesome right?! On its own this would be amazing; helping to teach the brain to fire up those safety pathways… But we are also seeing this as a tool to use before beginning EMDR to increase safety and a client’s capacity to process. The clients I have used it with are reporting good results and actually enjoying the process.
How Does SSP Work?
But here’s the deal: it is a commitment! Typically, the music is used 5 days in a row for an hour each. Some have benefited from stretching the 5 days out into 7 or 10 and we can customize based on needs. But 5 days is the minimum. I know that is a lot of days in a row to come to my office! For some this tool enhances therapy so much it is beyond worth it.
But I Already Have a Therapist
Already see a therapist and have been recommended for SSP? No problem… I work in conjunction with other therapists. I can even consult (with your permission) with your current therapist to really make SSP count as a part of your treatment plan.
More Info Needed about SSP
Here is a longer article about Safe and Sound Protocol and how it works (and all that good stuff) if you are interested. I know this is not a well known therapy and you may have some questions. If you are interested in a consult feel free to reach out.
Thanks and happy healing!
