These are the stuff! Chances are if you are reading this you are an EMDR trained therapist looking for more info on using the Early Trauma Protocol (ETP) of EMDR or further training on working with dissociation. If that is the case I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking the Dr. Sandra Paulsen trainings available via Steven Frankel Group. Also take a sec to google if Katie O’Shea is having any trainings you can attend.

I DO NOT feel that reading these books is enough for a clinician to move into treatment. Further training and consultation is the way to go.

Neither of these books are particularly long or difficult. Both include lots of research, Sandra Paulsen cartoons (great for understanding from a right brain or young part perspective), and clinical info. Good news…. They are not expensive either!

First try When There Are No Words: Repairing Early Trauma and Neglect From the Attachment Period With EMDR Therapy This text includes info on Panksepp’s neural affective circuits, Schore, and Polyvagal Theory. There is also an intro to Somatic Therapy interventions-which is more in depth in Dr Paulsen’s training.

After you have digested the above dive into Looking Through the Eyes of Trauma and Dissociation: An illustrated guide for EMDR therapists and clients This one has a ton of cartoons and illustrations. Right there in the title Dr. Paulsen says it is for clients. The only reason I have recommended these books to clients is if they has a lot of speculation, questions (hello protective parts) or are in a support role for a client. If you recommend these books to a client please read them also; else they will likely know more about dissociation than you. Not cool.

Reach out with questions/consultation. This is wonderful and complex stuff.

Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma by Janina Fisher is recommended for clients and clinicians

This workbook is amazing and DENSE. Not a casual read. However, when I am working with clients or clinicians and they are blown away by something I have taught it often comes from my training with Dr. Fisher. And this workbook includes many of her greatest hits 😉

Things you should know before you read:

  • It does seem more for therapists than clients to me. If you are a client and your therapist hasn’t read this you may know more about trauma then they do (only half kidding)
  • Much of the info is a “teaser” to greater theories and applications. If you are my client or consultee we can talk more about each in depth as needed
  • Dr. Fisher works with addiction and this workbook discusses addiction. Just because I recommended it for you does not necessarily mean I believe you have an addiction.
  • A client could think for anything being used to escape inner landscape as an addiction when reading this part i.e. scrolling Instagram for 2 hours
  • There is a good chance understanding this book will speed up your treatment/training because I will not have to explain all these concepts to you.

These recommendations are for clinicians or clients but if you are a client please don’t start the exercises before we discuss

Attachment is such an important part of healing. A helpful activity involves reading a book in a snuggly ‘kiddo way’ with an attachment figure. This may be done in session of between sessions at the therapist’s recommendation.

Therapists may also find these books helpful even working with ‘parts.’

Once again please don’t try this without therapist instructions and green light.

This author has many books like this and they are all good for attachment, these 2 are my favorites.

Nancy Tillman has A TON of amazing books everyone has heard of like On the Night You Were Born and It’s Time to Sleep, My Love but my favorite is The Crown on Your Head

Recommended for Clients and Clinicians working with Parts

So what makes this book special? It is the simplest way to explain parts for new clients or their families I have seen. This book includes a Symptoms of Trauma Checklist, my beloved Polyvagal chart (If you are a client you will definitely recognize it). We all have Parts by Colleen West also shows how trauma memories exist in a chain, the autonomic defenses often experienced, explains protectors and exiles, and a lovely description of “self energy” (aka your beautiful spark).

Please note I will ask most clients NOT to do the Parts Mapping on your own (pages 22-23)

Interested? Here are the amazon links for your convenience. They are technically “paid links” and I am supposed to receive a miniscule commission from Amazon if you buy the book through the link but I have never gotten a check 😉

trauma research

This information is for clients currently in therapy. I am proud to be part of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium (TSRC) a research initiative of the Kinsey Institute and Indiana University. The consortium is gathering research to further our understanding of human sexuality by studying the impact of traumatic stress on social behavior, sexual function, and intimacy. If you know me the you know I am a neurobiology dork and am honored to be participating in the clinical side of this important research. Also I know not everyone will be interested in taking part. That is OK!!! It is completely optional.

In order to participate a client must be:

  • 18 years or older
  • fluent in English
  • regularly seeing a therapist

Official Welcome Letter:

On behalf of your practitioner and a team of researchers at Indiana University, you are invited to participate in an online survey. This study is being conducted to better understand the range of personal histories, mental health, physical health, purpose in life, and body stress responses in those who are currently in therapy.

Your contribution will offer new knowledge for therapists, counselors, researchers, and other professionals. Your response will be anonymous and combined with those of many other people.

The survey consists of an online questionnaire which will take 30-40 minutes to complete, and can be done at the time and place of your choosing.  Please note that the survey includes questions about childhood and adult traumatic experiences, such as sexual abuse. You can skip any questions you don’t want to answer, or stop the survey at any time.

If you are ready to take the survey visit https://iu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9HnXQQNTjvsaArs

If you would like more info on TSRC visit https://kinseyinstitute.org/research/traumatic-stress.php for more research links and how the research will be used.

Guess what I did this weekend? I went back to EMDR Basic Training! Why you ask? I am in the process of becoming an EMDRIA Consultant. And one of the requirements is retaking EMDR Basic Training. So that is what I am doing!

EMDR Consultants go back to Basic Training

I am, as of January 2021 an EMDRIA Consultant in Training (CIT). What that means if I help other clinicians learn more about EMDR Therapy or work towards EMDRIA Certification.

Why is this so important to me? Because we can never have enough well trained EMDR therapists and I love consulting with other clinicians

What EMDR training company am I using?

For my returning to EMDR Basic Training I am going through EMDR Professional Training. These folks do things a little different than the other training companies. They offer Basic Training over a 3 sets of 3 day courses (Friday through Sunday) and include consultation.

When I did my original training through EMDR Institute the structure was 2 sets of 3 day courses but the required 10 hours of consultation was acquired outside of training and at an additional cost. Something cool about this company is it is founded by Francine Shapiro, the originator and developer of EMDR. I very much enjoyed my experience with EMDR Institute as well but the 10 hours of consultation was not as useful as I would have liked.

Fast forward to 2021… I have become certified in EMDR (an additional 20 hours of consultation, lots of CEUs and other requirements) and am on the path to become an EMDR Consultant.

So what does that mean? I help clinicians that have finished Basic Training (including their 10 hours of consultation) keep working towards their EMDR goals. That may mean a one time case consultation. Or a clinician looking to become and EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist. As of right now I can offer 15 or the 20 required hours of consultation for certification. When I complete my consultant training I can do all 20! Look here for more info!

Or check out my YouTube video about EMDR Consulting

I have other video about EMDR equipment such as Light Bar, Tappers, Artistic Flow, and how to set visual targets for online EMDR sessions.

And Questions? Feel free to reach out!

If you have seen me as a client or consultee you have heard me go on (and on and on at times) about the benefits of trauma informed yoga in the healing of the trauma injury. It is wonderful adjunctive work and when practiced can bring mind, body, and spirit into gentle awareness of one another. Want to learn more? Check out this article from Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (author of The Body Keeps the Score and all sorts of other science and clinical based information on trauma and PTSD) which details he thoughts on yoga’s potential in healing.

Is yoga always blissed out and a piece of cake? Nope… When a client is working through trauma they are inviting change. And yoga can help with that change. And it can be an emotional and somatic journey. But a journey well worth it! I HIGHLY recommend finding a trauma informed yoga instructor to help you on your journey. If you are in San Clemente/ Orange County we are lucky to have Jamie Hanson as a local resource for in person classes (as quarantine allows). Good news! Jamie now was offering online classes on a drop in basis or a membership for those looking to add her classes to their healing routine.  Check out these links to see if it would be a good fit for you!

Want to learn more about trauma healing and yoga? Let me know and I will work on more articles and YouTube videos on trauma informed yoga.

And you won’t believe it… I am on Instagram now! Follow if you like learning about EMDR, pics of flowers/the beach, and quotes with typos.

Wishing you well on your healing journey

Kelly Burris, LMFT (CA 86688) specializes in EMDR and trauma. Kelly sees clients in office in San Clemente and online for those in California. She is also and EMDRIA CIT offering consultation to clinicians looking to increase their clinical knowledge and confidence with EMDR.

Hey clients! If you’re watching this video at very well may be because I asked you to come up with a set up in your home or office for doing EMDR therapy when we are online. This should help!

We don’t always use this method. Typically if I have you guys setting up something like this it is because we have been losing connection are having slow internet during are Telehealth sessions. No worries!

All you’re going to need is two post Its, a Sharpie, and a little bit of creativity. You’re going to draw a circle on each post it. And find a place where you can sit and place the post it’s at eye level. We’re going to want your eyes to go from corner to corner when you look back and forth between the two Post-its. See it’s hard to describe right?! Hence the video. Happy watching!
